Lumina is committed to cultivating the development of emerging photographers. Through the Scholarship Program, we collaborate with a range of international partners to sponsor young and early-career photographers to attend our workshops and master-classes.

 

We are thrilled to announce that Bilder Nordic School of Photography will sponsor one emerging photographer to attend Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb’s Finding Your Vision workshop in Oslo this June. Applicants must be under 40, or a current student of photography, and based in Norway.

This scholarship will be juried by David Chickey, publisher and creative director of Radius Books

About the Workshop//

 

This 5-day photographic workshop will be about finding your own unique vision of Oslo by using the camera to explore the city in a direct, spontaneous way.  Open to both serious amateurs and professionals alike, it is a workshop that will emphasize the development of your own personal way of seeing photographically.  This workshop will also be about learning how to edit your work intuitively, and will include personalized and immersive discussions about how to take your photography to the next level. 

 

There are two main components of this class// the spontaneous act of photographing and intuitive editing. The workshop will begin with Alex and Rebecca, a creative team who often edit projects together [including their joint books, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba and their recent books, Slant Rhymes and Memory City], who will critique each participant’s past work as a starting off point for a larger discussion about various photographic issues. By that first afternoon, participants will be working on their first assignment, which they will choose themselves. It may be a specific street, neighborhood, subculture, ethnic group, profession, family [your own or others], friends, or individual; it could be a recreational facility/venue, night life in the city, or a form of transportation [buses, taxis, etc.]; it may be continuing work on an ongoing project in Oslo, but it must be something that you're passionate enough to return to every day to photograph.

For the rest of the workshop, we will meet in the mornings and critique as a group each student’s ongoing work. The afternoons [and some evenings] will be spent shooting. Throughout the workshop, we will try to build a coherent set of images for each photographer that will begin to represent his or her photographic stance or attitude toward the city of Oslo. We will view this work as a group at the end of the workshop.

Besides photographing and editing each day, there will be events some evenings, as well as a private walk through of Alex and Rebecca's exhibition, Slant Rhymes. During class, there will also be book presentations and an editing exercise.  We will discuss a variety of topics, including the process of photographing spontaneously; how to photograph in cultures other than one's own; the relationship between images [such as the sequencing and juxtaposition of photographs]; how to edit photographs intuitively; an introduction on being on press with a book; how to work with a designer on a book; the practical realities of the magazine and art worlds; the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; the difference between images in a book and images on the wall; and how long-term projects can evolve into books and exhibitions. Participants will also have private one-one-one portfolio review sessions with Alex and Rebecca.

NOTE// This is a workshop for photographers who collaborate with the world, not for those who dramatically alter their photographs digitally.

//About Alex and Rebecca//

​

Alex Webb has published 16 books, including a survey book of 30 years of color work, The Suffering of Light.  He’s exhibited at museums worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A Magnum Photos member since 1979, his work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and other publications. He has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.

Rebecca Norris Webb, originally a poet, often interweaves her text and photographs in her six books, most notably with her monograph, My Dakota—an elegy for her brother who died unexpectedly—with a solo exhibition of the work at The Cleveland Museum of Art in 2015.  Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Le Monde, among other publications, and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Cleveland Museum of Art, and George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY.

//About David Chickey//

​

David Chickey is a book designer and curator with over 20 years experience in the art business. A graduate of UNC, Chapel Hill and Sussex University, his experience includes work with both the museum and the gallery world — including the St. Louis Center for Contemporary Art, the Allene Lapides Gallery, and Sotheby’s, London. He is currently co-owner of Skolkin+Chickey which provides a full range of design and packaging services to artists, museums, and publishers. Clients have included Hudson Hills Press, Clarkson Potter, SITE Santa Fe, Magnum Photography, the Amon Carter Museum, and many others. He is the former board chair of the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, NM and the Publisher & Creative Director at Radius Books.
